Former Manchester United academy player DJ Buffonge has revealed he was fined by the club for getting a tattoo shortly after turning 18, describing the punishment as confusing and frustrating during what was meant to be a milestone moment in his life.
Buffonge, who spent four years at the club training under renowned managers including Louis van Gaal, José Mourinho, and Ole Gunnar Solskjær, spoke candidly in a recent interview with The Athletic about the unexpected disciplinary action he faced.
“At that time, there was a rule that no youth-team players were allowed to get any tattoos,” Buffonge explained. “I had abided by the rules until I was 18, where I’m legally allowed to get a tattoo. And I felt like getting one on my chest.”
The quote he chose to have inked carried deep personal meaning: “I was put on this earth to achieve my greatest self, to live out my purpose and to do it courageously.” For Buffonge, it was intended as a motivational message—a private mantra visible only to himself, even when in his kit.
“It was for me to look at myself in the mirror on game day,” he said. “Even when I’m short-sleeved, no one can see it. But I got in trouble for that.”
Despite the tattoo’s discreet placement and personal significance, Buffonge was docked a week’s wages. The disciplinary move left him baffled, especially as he had waited until reaching the legal age to make the decision.
Looking back, Buffonge noted how much the culture around tattoos has shifted, even within the club. “Now in the youth team at United, everyone has their tattoos, expressing themselves with their art,” he observed, pointing to the growing acceptance of body art in professional football.
Buffonge’s experience offers a glimpse into the rigid structure and high expectations placed on young footballers at elite clubs—where personal expression is often secondary to discipline and conformity. Though his time at Manchester United may not have culminated in a senior breakthrough, his story resonates with many young athletes who must navigate both professional pressures and the desire to assert their identity.
