Founded in December 2024 by artist Kelly Martin, Bugpin was designed to be a welcoming, intimate environment where clients feel respected and at ease throughout their tattoo journey. The studio’s mission is simple: to offer a personalized experience where clients can express themselves in a safe, supportive setting.
A Vision for Comfort and Creativity
Kelly Martin, a former hair school student, opened Bugpin with a clear vision in mind. “I always knew I wanted to do something creative, but tattooing felt too far out there,” Martin explained. “I decided to push past my anxieties, and it ended up going really well. I fell in love with tattooing, and here I am today, running my own studio.”
Having spent years working in traditional tattoo shops, Martin wanted to create a space where clients could feel comfortable enough to express their emotions and vulnerabilities. “I’ve had clients break down in private, and I know they wouldn’t do that in a typical shop with people around,” she said. “While I’m not aiming to make people cry, I want them to feel safe enough to have those moments if needed.”
Specializing in Custom Work
Bugpin Tattoo Studio specializes in custom tattoos, with a particular focus on American traditional and illustrative styles. Martin’s work often involves deeply meaningful tattoos, including memorials, cover-ups from abusive relationships, and matching designs for families and friends.
By operating on an appointment-only basis, Martin eliminates the distractions of walk-ins and ensures that each client receives the time and attention they deserve. The studio also utilizes a flat-rate pricing model, with tattoos starting at $80, making it more accessible and anxiety-free compared to the traditional hourly pricing model.
A Welcoming Space
The studio’s atmosphere is designed to be warm, clean, and inviting. Plants line the windowsill, and local artist Pauly M. Everett’s artwork adorns the walls. Clients can enjoy refreshments during their visit, and private group bookings are available for friends or loved ones who want to get tattooed together.
“I want the space to feel like an apartment—cozy, private, and intentional,” Martin said. “It’s about creating a space where clients feel at home.”
Building a Creative Community
Beyond providing a personalized tattoo experience, Martin is committed to establishing Bugpin as a creative hub within the Flint community. She hopes to host workshops and sober, family-friendly events, offering a space where the local art scene can come together.
Bugpin has already begun participating in local events such as Drop Fest and Alley Fest, offering flash tattoos and collaborating with local artists and vendors. Additionally, the studio participates in Flint’s monthly Art Walk, where local artists showcase their work and engage with the community.
“There’s a lack of creative spaces in Flint that aren’t tied to bars or nightlife,” Martin said. “I’m trying to open up the front of the studio for workshops and creative meetups. It’s about bringing people together in a way that’s not just about getting a tattoo, but about creating and connecting.”
Looking Ahead: Community-Focused Initiatives
Martin is also working on new initiatives, including temporary tattoo events for children, in partnership with local organizations. These events aim to offer a safe, fun experience for young people to engage with art in a creative and healthy environment.
With plans to continue growing both her business and her community outreach, Kelly Martin’s vision for Bugpin Tattoo Studio is clear: it’s a space where creativity, comfort, and connection come together.
