A Swiss woman has captured global attention after revealing a tattoo that not only turns heads, but also functions — literally — as a barcode.
The woman, known as Dyu, went viral on social media after tattooing a working barcode from a Red Bull can onto her arm. The barcode, when scanned at self-checkout counters, successfully registers a 250-milliliter can of the energy drink — much to the amazement of viewers worldwide.
A devoted Red Bull enthusiast, Dyu spent over $600 (approximately ₹51,000) on the custom piece. The tattoo features a unique artistic twist: an insect appears to be nibbling on the barcode, an element inspired by a sketch drawn by her sister.
Despite the eye-catching result, Dyu admitted she was unsure the barcode would actually function. “The tattoo artist did not guarantee it would work, so I wasn’t sure either,” she told a news outlet. “But the next day, I tried it at my workplace, and it scanned. I was really surprised and happy.”
In an Instagram video that has since amassed over 19 million views, Dyu is seen using a handheld scanner at a self-checkout kiosk, successfully ringing up a Red Bull can. “For everyone wondering if my Red Bull barcode works — yes, it does (if you scan it at the right angle, and in Switzerland),” she wrote in the caption.
Social media users have reacted with a mix of astonishment and curiosity. Some praised the creativity and precision required for the tattoo to function, while others questioned the barcode’s long-term viability. “What happens if Red Bull changes the barcode?” one commenter asked.
