Tucked away in an unlikely corner of South Bristol, Boona Boona Coffee Roasters is fast earning a reputation as a hidden gem — even if first-time visitors may question their satnav as they pull into the Windmill Farm Business Centre on Bartley Street.
Located between East Street in Bedminster and Windmill Hill City Farm, the newly opened café occupies the site of a former air conditioning business. Though situated in a business park primarily populated by catering units, Boona Boona stands out thanks to clear signage and its welcoming setup.
Parking can be a challenge, with many spots reserved for business tenants, but guests are rewarded with a charming outdoor seating area featuring wooden picnic benches shaded by parasols. Inside, the café offers a cozy atmosphere, with walls adorned in local photography and ample seating for those seeking shelter from the weather.
Above the café lies a little-known tattoo studio, The Tattooed Tea Cup, run by tattoo artist Katy Howarth. Her business cards sit beside the café’s glass display case — filled with an array of tempting baked goods.
During a midweek visit around noon, the café was pleasantly quiet. We sampled a generously sized vegan cinnamon bun, sourced from a renowned bakehouse in St Phillips. Priced at £3.20, it was easily shareable — though its rich, sticky sweetness and soft, well-layered dough could justify keeping it all to oneself.
Other treats on offer included a Kinder XL brownie (£3.75), a Kinder-stuffed cookie (£3.80), a vegan Biscoff brownie (£3.70), a vegan almond croissant (£3.20), and a gluten-free Bakewell blondie (£3.70).
Accompanying our bun, we ordered a flat white (£3.50) and a hot chocolate (£3.70). The drinks were served in eye-catching, brightly colored teacups and saucers, complete with elegant latte art. Both were delivered to our table promptly by warm and attentive staff, who thoughtfully plated our cinnamon bun for easy sharing.
With quality coffee, exceptional baked goods, and a quietly quirky setting beneath a tattoo studio, Boona Boona Coffee Roasters offers a refreshing retreat from the hustle and bustle — and a destination well worth seeking out.
