Dutch engineering firm KCI The Engineers has been awarded the contract to deliver structural analysis and design of jackets for the LanWin2 and BalWin3 offshore grid connection systems. The scope includes concept, basic, and detailed design phases for both high-voltage direct current (HVDC) platforms.
The contract was issued by Dragados Offshore, which is responsible for delivering the HVDC transmission systems for both projects. Dragados, in partnership with Siemens Energy, secured the overall project contract from German-Dutch transmission system operator TenneT in April 2023, covering three offshore grid connections in total.
As part of its growing involvement in the offshore wind sector, Dragados Offshore recently announced plans to open a new production site in Algeciras, Spain, to manufacture TenneT’s 2 GW offshore converter stations. Beginning in 2026, the LanWin2 and BalWin3 platform topsides will be constructed at the site, with commissioning scheduled for 2030 and 2031, respectively.
Additionally, Nexans will supply the onshore and offshore export cable systems for LanWin2, under a contract signed with TenneT in January 2025.
Once operational, BalWin3 and LanWin4 will connect to the onshore grid in Wilhelmshaven, while LanWin2 will land power near Heide, strengthening Germany’s offshore wind transmission capacity in the North Sea.
