Perched in the hills above Istanbul, Scalla is a new 120-seat restaurant where design and dining intertwine, reflecting the spirit of the Mediterranean through every detail. The name “Scalla,” Italian for “staircase,” hints at the architectural journey within this warmly crafted space, designed by Urbanjobs — a multidisciplinary practice led by Murat Dede, known for creating sophisticated retail, residential, corporate, and Michelin-star restaurant interiors.
Dede’s vision combines rich materials such as copper, leather, and wood to foster a tactile, inviting atmosphere. Blue marble-effect cabinetry contrasts elegantly with copper-toned hardware sourced from Turnstyle Designs, while an engraved plaque embedded in the geometric-tiled floor bears the restaurant’s name. Upholstered seating features luxurious fabrics from Dedar and Ralph Lauren, adding layers of softness and texture, complemented by wall coverings from ARTE and Phillip Jeffries.
The Glass Curtain and Architectural Flow
At the core of Scalla’s design is the Glass Curtain — a curvilinear architectural element inspired by the flowing lines of the Mediterranean coastline. This three-dimensional glass surface undulates, folding inward and outward to shape the space dynamically. Acting as a breathable, flexible shell, the curtain is supported by copper-coated aluminum profiles, creating a fluid and airy structure.
Anchoring the space is a central wooden bar that echoes the curtain’s curvilinear form. Serving as a social hub and wayfinder, it helps guests orient themselves within the restaurant. During daylight hours, sunlight filters through the glass curtain, while evenings are illuminated by bespoke wall sconces, table lamps, and integrated LED lighting systems, creating an atmospheric transition from day to night.
“Guests first pass in front of the bar and then the kitchen pass-through window before ascending to a higher level, offering a shift in perception,” explains Dede. “On their way back from the bathrooms, they re-engage with the interior before once again encountering the bar, reinforcing spatial continuity.”
A Ceiling That Flows and Outdoor Ambiance
The ceiling design continues the restaurant’s undulating aesthetic, with elevated sections, structural beams, and woven leather inserts adding texture and dimension throughout the interior.
Outside, the curved motif extends to a pergola that seamlessly integrates with sofa seating. Sculptural plantings, curated by master florist Yunus Karma, create a distinctive microclimate, enhancing the outdoor dining experience with natural artistry.
Scalla’s thoughtful fusion of Mediterranean-inspired design and cuisine offers guests not only a meal but an immersive sensory journey framed by craftsmanship and architectural poetry.
