What began in a prison cell has transformed into a thriving tattoo studio in the heart of Downtown Wilmington. Chris Dobson, owner of Castle Keep Tattoo, is living proof that redemption is possible — even after a decade behind bars.
“In my early 20s, I was addicted to drugs, committed a crime, and ended up in prison,” Dobson said. “I was stuck in a cell, around the worst of the worst. I was so broke down, there was nothing left to grab onto.”
In 2011, Dobson’s life hit rock bottom. But in his most isolated moments, he found solace in the simplest of tools — a pencil and paper. Art became his therapy and escape, a way to express creativity when the rest of his world was confined.
“I realized that tattooing was going to be the thing that I really focused on,” he said.
Dobson’s ambition grew, even while others doubted him.
“I was always told I’d never make money doing this, that I couldn’t be successful,” he recalled. “That pushed me into depression for a while.”
But his passion for art pulled him back. “I decided I’m going to win instead of lose.”
After serving his time and being released, Dobson turned that determination into action. He opened Castle Keep Tattoo, enlisting a group of talented artists he had long known and respected.
“I have some really great artists that I’ve known for a while to come with me and open it up,” he said.
Today, Castle Keep Tattoo is earning rave reviews for its stunning work and welcoming atmosphere. Dobson credits perseverance, teamwork, and the healing power of art for the studio’s success.
“Keep pushing and continuing to get better,” he said.
Now a respected business owner and mentor, Dobson reflects on the dramatic turn his life has taken. “If the person I was ten years ago came through the door, I would tell him to turn around and leave.”
His story, he hopes, can inspire others facing similar struggles.
