Taylor Kinney Gets Tattooed by Apprentice Artist: “I Was Her First Victim”

by Jessica

Taylor Kinney, best known for his role as the fearless Firehouse 51 Lieutenant on Chicago Fire, has captured the hearts of fans with his heroic on-screen performances. Whether he’s rushing into burning buildings to save lives or navigating his relationship with Stella Kidd (played by Miranda Rae Mayo), Kinney’s portrayal of Severide has earned him a dedicated following. But beyond his firefighting persona, Kinney has shown he’s just as adventurous off-screen.

One memorable example: Kinney’s decision to get inked by someone still in the early stages of their tattoo career. In 2019, the actor took to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes look at his tattoo session, where he appeared completely unfazed as he sat for a leg tattoo.

Tattooed by a Friend’s Wife: A Chicago Fire Connection

Kinney’s tattoo adventure came about through a close connection to his Chicago Fire family. In a 2019 interview with Jam TV, he revealed that the artist in question was none other than Murphy Miñoso, the wife of his Chicago Fire co-star, Joe Miñoso. While Murphy was still an apprentice tattoo artist at the time, Kinney wasn’t hesitant to sit in her chair.

Kinney explained, “You can practice and try on synthetics and other materials, but nothing compares to real skin. So I told her, ‘I have some stuff you can cover,’ and I ended up being her first victim.”

Despite her apprentice status, Kinney had full confidence in Murphy’s skills and was eager to get a tattoo that held significant personal meaning.

A Childhood Memory Transformed into Ink

The design for Kinney’s tattoo was inspired by a cherished childhood memory. He described a picture that hung in his bathroom growing up—a serene scene of a man lounging in a hammock on a beach, with a sailboat anchored nearby. “I thought, ‘Someday I’d like to be in that hammock, with a little boat and a little hat on, just taking a nap,'” Kinney recalled.

The end result of the tattoo session was a success, with Kinney expressing his satisfaction with the finished design. But the story doesn’t end there—after sharing the experience on social media, Murphy Miñoso saw a surge in interest, which helped her grow her clientele. “She got a lot of referrals,” Kinney shared with enthusiasm. “Now she’s off to the races.”

How Many Tattoos Does Taylor Kinney Have?

Kinney’s tattoo story has sparked curiosity about his other ink. While the actor has yet to confirm an exact number of tattoos, at least two have been visible in the public eye. In addition to his beach-themed tattoo on his right leg, Kinney also sports a large back tattoo of an angelic figure with outstretched wings, which was glimpsed during the 2015 Polar Plunge event in Chicago.

Kinney’s tattoos are just one more way he’s shown his adventurous spirit, whether it’s on screen or in his personal life.
