A woman has sparked online debate after revealing her best friend tattooed her entire name — first, middle, and last — in large, bold font on their wrist as a surprise birthday gesture, leaving her deeply unsettled.
The story emerged on Reddit’s widely followed forum Am I the A——, where users seek input on personal conflicts. The original poster (OP) explained that the tattoo was done without her knowledge or consent.
“It’s absolutely massive and bold,” she wrote. “I mean my full first, middle and last name… tattooed in a very large font on their wrist as a surprise for my birthday without asking my permission.”
The woman said she was so shocked by the gesture that it took her several hours before she could call her friend to express her discomfort.
“I told them that it absolutely has to go and I am not okay with it,” she shared. “If they had asked me about this, I would have told them absolutely not.”
Making things more awkward, she ran into her friend at a Walmart while shopping with her boyfriend — who, she noted, also didn’t take the tattoo well.
In her post, the woman asked if she was in the wrong for demanding the tattoo be removed, describing it as “jarring” and invasive.
The overwhelming majority of Reddit commenters backed the OP, stating that she had every right to feel uncomfortable and set boundaries.
“Sounds like your friend is in love with you,” one commenter speculated. “You can’t control what they do, but you can control your reaction.”
Others encouraged the OP to trust her instincts. “If your gut is telling you to bail on the friendship, I think you should listen,” one wrote. “But if you think it was just an over-the-top gesture, maybe have a serious conversation.”
While the decision to remove the tattoo ultimately lies with her friend, the incident has clearly left a mark — emotionally, if not physically — on their relationship.
