Toronto’s Line 2 Extension Advances with Sener Leading Engineering Design

by Jessica

Toronto’s ambitious Line 2 subway extension has taken a significant step forward, with engineering firm Sener confirmed as the lead designer for the 7.8-kilometre underground project. The expansion includes three new subway stations, a station upgrade, eight emergency exits, and four electrical substations, each integral to supporting the city’s long-term transit goals.

The extension will run entirely underground and feature surface-level bus terminals at each new station to improve multimodal access. Once operational, the line is expected to serve approximately 105,000 daily riders, including 52,000 new transit users. The shift to public transport is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 10,000 tonnes annually.

Sener’s scope includes engineering design for stations, track, and systems, encompassing structural, architectural, geotechnical, and electromechanical components. The firm is also responsible for electrification, train control, communications, and signalling—key to ensuring the system’s safety and efficiency across the broader Line 2 network.

While early construction activity began in 2011, the project has faced delays and now extends beyond its original 2024 completion target. Despite this, the Line 2 extension remains a cornerstone of the Ontario Line strategy to modernize and expand Toronto’s subway infrastructure in response to rising demand.
