Tattoo Bet Almost Becomes Reality for Schauffele & Burns at PGA Championship

by Jessica

Xander Schauffele and Sam Burns weren’t in contention for the win at the PGA Championship, but that didn’t stop them from chasing their own kind of victory — with matching tattoos on the line.

Grouped together for an early Sunday tee time at Quail Hollow and sitting well behind leader Scottie Scheffler, the pair decided to create their own high-stakes motivation. According to Burns, the two made a lighthearted bet before the round.

“Xander and I joked to start the day, if we both shot 62, we were getting matching tattoos,” Burns told CBS Sports, via Golf Digest’s Alex Myers. “We were giving it our best early, and it looked pretty good.”

For much of the round, it looked like the ink might actually be on the table. Both players were 5-under par heading into the 15th tee, making that magic number seem just within reach. But the course’s treacherous “Green Mile” closing stretch proved too much.

Burns finished with an impressive 4-under 67, while Schauffele carded a 3-under 68 — both their lowest rounds of the tournament, but not quite tattoo-worthy scores.

Still, the bet seemed to provide exactly the spark they were looking for, adding some fun and fire to a final round with no shot at the trophy. And while the tattoos didn’t happen this time, maybe the next friendly wager between the two PGA stars will end in permanent ink.
