The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a public health advisory after identifying bacterial contamination in two specific lots of tattoo ink, urging both tattoo artists and consumers to exercise caution.
According to the FDA, testing revealed that certain products from Sacred Tattoo Ink contain pathogenic microorganisms that could pose serious health risks when injected into the skin during tattooing.
Products Under Advisory
The affected inks include:
Sacred Tattoo Ink – Raven Black, lot No. RB0624, with a “best by” date of June 28, 2027
Sacred Tattoo Ink – Sunny Daze, lot No. SD1124, with a “best by” date of November 1, 2027
“Infections can result from using tattoo inks contaminated with harmful bacteria, particularly because the process involves breaking the skin barrier,” the agency warned. “Symptoms commonly reported include rashes or red papules in the area where the contaminated ink has been applied.”
What Consumers Should Know
The FDA urges individuals considering a tattoo to inquire about the ink brand and lot number being used. If either of the flagged Sacred Tattoo Ink products is in use, the agency advises choosing an alternative ink or postponing the procedure altogether.
Tattoo artists and studios are encouraged to immediately discontinue use of the contaminated products and follow appropriate safety protocols to protect clients.
No recall has been announced as of yet, but the advisory remains active while the FDA continues its investigation.
