As festival-goers prepare for the iconic Glastonbury Festival in 2025, organizers are once again reminding attendees of a crucial change to the event’s dress code. What was once a staple of festival fashion—sparkling glitter—has now been officially banned for environmental reasons.
Flamboyant fashion choices have always been encouraged at Worthy Farm, but Glastonbury’s 2024 packing list introduced a change that has sparked conversation: the prohibition of all glitter, including biodegradable varieties. This ban has been carried over to the 2025 festival, which is set to take place in June.
The Glitter Ban Explained
The decision to ban glitter was made to protect the environment. Organizers had previously allowed biodegradable glitter, advising festival-goers to only bring eco-friendly versions. However, as of last year, even biodegradable glitter is no longer allowed. According to Glastonbury’s updated guidelines, all glitter—regardless of its biodegradability—has been deemed problematic due to its breakdown into microplastics.
The 2024 festival’s official packing list stated: “Do not bring any glitter (even the biodegradable kind breakdown into micro-plastics and are problematic environmental pollutants).” This message has been reiterated in the 2025 edition, with an updated explanation. The new guide now reads: “Do not bring body glitter. Even biodegradable body glitter will not properly break down without being heat-treated.”
Fan Reaction and Alternatives
The glitter ban, while significant, has not gone unnoticed among Glastonbury fans. On various social media platforms, such as Reddit and Facebook, festival-goers expressed their surprise. One user on the Glastonbury Reddit thread inquired, “Just saw that they have updated the what-not-to-bring list to include biodegradable glitter! What else can I adorn my face with?”
The response from fellow fans was quick and supportive. Many suggested using alternatives such as temporary tattoos, dried flowers, and face paint to achieve a similar festive look without the environmental impact. One person on Reddit remarked: “There’s no need to glue bits of plastic to your face at Glastonbury. Spend less time faffing at your tent with glitter and more time exploring.”
On Facebook, a fan inquired about purchasing glitter for their face and hair, only to be reminded in the comments that glitter is now officially banned. One user simply stated, “Glitter is litter.” Another fan advised, “Get fake tattoos or stickers instead… or face paint! Glitter is a no-no now.”
The Push for Sustainability
The shift in policy is part of Glastonbury’s continued efforts to promote sustainability and reduce its environmental footprint. With over 200,000 attendees each year, even small changes can have a large impact. As festival-goers look forward to the 2025 event, the updated packing list also includes practical recommendations such as bringing wellies or sturdy boots, a waterproof coat, and weather-appropriate clothing to stay comfortable throughout the event, rain or shine.
While glitter may no longer be allowed, Glastonbury’s spirit of creativity and self-expression remains very much alive, with fans encouraged to explore other ways to dress up and stand out during the iconic festival experience.
