For some, tattoos made in the heat of the moment might lead to regret, but for Philadelphia Eagles fan Dan Morgan, his decision to ink a tribute to the historic “Philly Special” play was one of the best he’s ever made.
Less than 24 hours after the Eagles’ Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots, Morgan had the famous trick play tattooed on his right forearm. The “Philly Special,” a memorable touchdown pass from tight end Trey Burton to quarterback Nick Foles just before halftime, played a key role in securing the Eagles’ first Super Bowl title and their first NFL championship since 1960.
The tattoo, which took about an hour to complete, shows the exact play design. Morgan shared the image with NJ.com, noting that the diagram might appear reversed because of the mirror in the selfie.
“I wanted mine to be less obvious,” Morgan said, explaining his choice. “Most people are either adding a Lombardi trophy or something similar. I wanted something that wasn’t so on-the-nose. Random people might see it and take a second to recognize it, but that’s part of the fun.”
Morgan’s unique take on the Super Bowl celebration beats some of the more conventional tattoo choices, like the one Eagles lineman Chris Long now has to get—a tattoo of linebackers coach Ken Flajole’s face, a promise made to his coach.
Morgan surely feels more satisfied with his decision than the New England Patriots fan who prematurely inked a Super Bowl tattoo on his back last week—before his team’s loss in the big game. For Morgan, the “Philly Special” will forever be a lasting reminder of a defining moment in Eagles history.
