In a striking show of solidarity that transcends football rivalry, an Everton supporter has had the words “You’ll Never Walk Alone” — the anthem of archrivals Liverpool FC — tattooed across his back to help raise funds for a child in urgent need of medical treatment.
Matty Bowman, a devoted 26-year-old Everton fan, took on the charitable challenge to support four-year-old George Johnson, who suffers from a rare digestive disorder that prevents him from eating normally. George must be fed through his heart, and his family has been raising funds to send him to the United States for specialist care.
The Johnson family launched the Team George campaign with a goal of raising £15,000 (approximately $25,000 USD) for the trip and treatment. Upon hearing about the appeal, Bowman pledged to get the Liverpool-themed tattoo if the target was reached — a particularly bold move given his deep ties to Everton, which include multiple tattoos of his beloved club.
With the fundraising goal now met, Bowman followed through on his promise and had the iconic Liverpool phrase inked onto his back over the weekend. The act comes just ahead of a pivotal Merseyside derby, where local passions run high between the two Premier League clubs.
George’s family is currently awaiting an appointment with a U.S. specialist, but fundraising efforts continue to help cover additional costs. Donations are still being accepted.
Bowman joins a growing list of football fans willing to set aside club rivalries in support of charitable causes. In 2023, Manchester City supporter Chris Worthington similarly agreed to get a Manchester United tattoo to raise funds for a charity that supported his daughter’s medical recovery.
