New York City’s diverse tattoo scene has no shortage of talent, but few artists have made a mark as swiftly or distinctively as Sumok Kim. Once a children’s book salesman in South Korea, Kim has emerged as a leading figure in realist tattooing, captivating clients and judges alike from his studio base in NYC.
Kim’s journey into tattoo artistry began in 2015, far from conventional. While working at a publishing house, regular contact with illustrators ignited a passion for art that went beyond the printed page. Without formal training, Kim taught himself to draw and tattoo, relying on online resources and mentorship from fellow artists—a path that speaks to his drive and innate ability.
Specializing in black and grey realism, Kim’s work is distinguished by a near-photographic attention to detail. His early designs focused on nature and animal portraits, allowing him to develop mastery over texture and depth. In recent years, he has expanded his repertoire to include Eastern-themed imagery, incorporating elements of mythology and symbolism. “There is no limit to improvement in tattooing,” Kim said in an interview. “There is always something new to learn.”
His evolution as an artist has brought critical acclaim. Kim earned top honors at major tattoo conventions, including multiple first- and second-place wins for large realism and black-and-grey pieces at the NY Empire State Tattoo Expo and the 2024 Vancouver Tattoo Show. He also claimed the coveted “Best of Show” award in Vancouver. In 2025, Ink On Sky recognized him as one of the top 10 tattoo artists in New York City.
Before settling in New York, Kim tattooed in major cities such as Toronto, Vancouver, and Seoul. These international experiences have shaped his understanding of the cultural nuances in tattoo artistry. He notes that while Korean clients often seek visually striking designs, Western clients tend to value deeper meaning and storytelling—an approach Kim now embraces by incorporating themes like samurai warriors and spiritual motifs.
Currently an ambassador for Mast Tattoo Needles’ Pro Team, Kim has built a strong digital presence with over 60,000 followers on Instagram. Looking ahead, he plans to travel across the U.S. in 2025 to participate in more conventions and continue refining his craft.
Sumok Kim’s rise from self-taught illustrator to award-winning tattoo artist exemplifies the power of passion and perseverance. As he pushes the boundaries of skin as canvas, his story continues to inspire both aspiring artists and admirers of inked realism worldwide.
