The Clay County Sheriff’s Office has released a sketch of a partial leg tattoo that could help identify the remains of a person discovered in the St. Johns River near Fleming Island. The remains, found in early May, are still unidentified, and the investigation continues.
On Monday, the sheriff’s office shared the sketch, which depicts a partial leg tattoo, believed to be one of several tattoos found on the victim’s leg. The tattoo’s visibility was limited due to the advanced state of decomposition, officials said.
The remains were discovered on May 7 at around 5:07 p.m. by a local homeowner, who called 911 to report skeletal remains near the bulkhead of their home, not far from the Doctors Lake Bridge, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies, along with patrol units, detectives, and a dive team, responded to the scene. The remains were subsequently sent to the medical examiner’s office for further investigation.
At this time, the cause of death has not been disclosed by authorities.
“This could take months to properly identify the remains, and there’s even a possibility that they may never be identified,” News4JAX Crime and Safety Analyst Tom Hackney remarked in May.
The investigation into the discovery of the remains is ongoing, as authorities work to determine the identity and circumstances surrounding the victim’s death.
