Milwaukee Health Department Investigates Tattoo Infections

by Jessica

The City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) is investigating multiple tattoo-related infections in minors that may be linked to an unlicensed tattoo operator operating under the name Davinci Way Ink. The infections are suspected to have been caused by exposure to nontuberculous mycobacteria, a bacteria commonly found in water and soil that can cause serious skin infections when introduced beneath the skin during tattooing.

The first case was reported on Tuesday, May 14, by a medical provider, with additional cases following on Monday, May 20, and Monday, June 2. All affected individuals were minors who received tattoos from unlicensed providers.

Milwaukee Police and health officials have identified Jonathan Beasley as the individual behind Davinci Way Ink. Beasley was cited on Wednesday, May 28, for tattooing minors and operating without a proper license. Investigators have linked him to locations at 6115 N. Teutonia Ave. and 5019 W. North Ave. in Milwaukee.

Authorities are advising anyone who has been tattooed by Davinci Way Ink in the past two to three months to be vigilant for symptoms such as persistent redness, swelling, pain, bumps, or drainage at the tattoo site. MHD recommends that individuals experiencing these symptoms seek medical attention immediately and inform their healthcare providers about the tattoo.
