Throughout September, Vienna’s residents and visitors were invited to explore the vibrant world of contemporary design by following a distinctive bright yellow line weaving through the city. Shops marked with this yellow signage offered free tickets to the Living & Lifestyle Messe at Hofburg, along with a “Design Guide” listing all participating venues and providing detailed information on exhibited works. The city itself became a gallery, with three emerging artists’ creations featured prominently in the Karlsplatz and Volkstheater underground stations.
From October 4 to 6, the Design District culminates in a major event—the Living & Lifestyle Messe held once again at the historic Hofburg palace. Drawing 250 national and international brands, the fair showcases the finest in industrial design, real estate, automotive innovation, interiors, lifestyle products, technology, hi-fi equipment, art, and accessories. Organizers Sabine Jäger and Peter Sirch emphasize interactivity, encouraging visitors to engage directly with exhibits: “We want you to experience how it feels to live with these pieces—sit on the sofa, open the sliding wardrobe doors!”
A highlight of this year’s fair is the special exhibition, “Fashion and Accessories,” hosted in the elegant Radetzky Apartments. This curated collection celebrates the little and large treasures that enrich everyday life—from timeless clothing, bags, and jewelry to cosmetics, home textiles, and lighting. The exhibition balances classic designs with innovative creations, featuring meticulously crafted handmade products renowned for their quality and uniqueness.
Sustainability remains at the forefront of design trends, a theme thoroughly explored at the “Circular District” exhibition. Here, visitors can discover eco-friendly materials, recycling initiatives, and cutting-edge approaches championed by start-ups committed to sustainable design solutions.
Despite the indoor setting, the exhibition also dedicates special attention to garden living, reflecting the growing trend of integrating terraces, balconies, and gardens into everyday living spaces. Sabine Jäger notes, “The garden, terrace, and balcony have become extensions of the home.”
Automotive enthusiasts can experience the latest innovations firsthand, with premium brands Tesla and Alfa Romeo unveiling their newest models at the event. Interested visitors can book online for exclusive test drives.
For those seeking travel inspiration, the Design District features the Best Alpine Wellness Hotels, showcasing design excellence in hospitality. Highlights include the Nesslerhof and the Krallerhof, the latter famed for its iconic spa designed by Hadi Teherani. Complementing the design and lifestyle offerings, culinary experiences during the exhibition will be curated by Tatarie Marie alongside Wagramer winemakers and Mionetto Prosecco, enhancing the event’s atmosphere with fine food and drink.
This year’s Design District promises a rich journey into the world of beautiful, thoughtful design—an immersive experience blending innovation, sustainability, and style at the heart of Vienna.
