Czech Republic Launches Design Competition for High-Speed Rail Bridge

by Jessica

The Czech rail infrastructure agency, Správa železnic, has officially launched an international design competition to develop a new high-speed rail bridge that will span the Oslava River near Velké Meziříčí in southern Czechia.

The bridge will form part of the planned high-speed railway line connecting Světlá nad Sázavou and Velká Bíteš. The competition seeks innovative proposals that are both technically and economically feasible while harmonizing with the surrounding landscape.

Conducted anonymously, the contest will unfold in two distinct phases. The first will focus on the structural and architectural design of the bridge itself. The second phase will explore the bridge’s integration into the natural environment, with a strong emphasis on visual appeal and ecological sensitivity.

Organizers stress that sustainability will be a key evaluation criterion, alongside engineering quality and aesthetic merit.

The initiative reflects Czechia’s broader efforts to modernize its rail infrastructure and expand its high-speed network, positioning design and environmental stewardship at the heart of future transport projects.
