The highly anticipated line-up for this year’s Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo has been officially unveiled, and one of the most exciting announcements is the inclusion of the Ukraine Naval Forces Orchestra. This marks a historic moment for the Tattoo, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the iconic event, which has been a key feature of the Edinburgh festival scene since 1950.
The theme for the 2025 Tattoo is The Heroes That Made Us, and it will feature around 800 performers from across the globe, celebrating both military and civilian heroes who have made significant contributions to their communities, countries, and histories. The event is set to be a spectacle, with a variety of performances showcasing the rich traditions, heroism, and courage from around the world.
A standout feature of this year’s Tattoo will be the inclusion of the Ukraine Naval Forces Orchestra. This addition reflects the global significance of the event, especially as it honors the resilience and strength of the Ukrainian people during a time of conflict. The orchestra will perform alongside other prestigious groups, including the Band of the Polish Border Guard, Top Secret Drum Corps, United States Honour Guard Drill Team, and the United States Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps. The Massed Pipes and Drums, military musicians, and Tattoo dancers will also perform, adding to the diverse and dynamic nature of the show.
The British Army will be strongly represented in the performance lineup as well, with a series of regimental bands, including the Band of The Royal Regiment of Scotland, British Army Band Catterick, British Army Band Tidworth, and the Pipes and Drums of 1st Battalion Scots Guards. Other regimental groups, including the 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, and 4th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, will also take part, bringing their unique traditions and displays of heroism to the grand celebration.
The new creative director, Alan Lane, who is taking the helm for his first Tattoo in 2025, shared his excitement about this significant milestone. He expressed how much of an honor it is to direct the Tattoo, especially with such a monumental anniversary. Lane has been working with his team for over a year on the anniversary show, and he is eager to share the powerful stories of heroism, tradition, and unity that will be brought to life during the event.
“The Heroes Who Made Us” theme will honor not only the Tattoo’s rich history but also the everyday heroes who have shaped society through their volunteer work, courage, and inspiration. Lane emphasized the importance of blending tradition with innovation to create a fresh yet respectful show, acknowledging the event’s legacy while offering new and exciting performances that will captivate the audience.
In addition to the tribute to military heroes, the Tattoo will also spotlight the important contributions of ordinary people—those who may not be in the public eye but whose lives and work help shape and strengthen communities. Lane noted that the creative and production teams behind the event are “second to none,” and they have worked tirelessly to bring a new level of energy and emotion to the show.
Jason Barrett, the Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, expressed immense pride in unveiling the 75th-anniversary show. He called it a “testament to the enduring legacy and global significance” of the Tattoo, noting that the event continues to inspire audiences and bring people together through the power of music, performance, and storytelling.
“We look forward to sharing this special celebration with the world,” said Barrett, “and continuing to inspire and connect people through the power of performance and storytelling.” The event will not only celebrate the traditions and regimental bands but will also reflect on the broader role that arts and performance can play in bridging cultural divides and promoting unity across the world.
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo remains an unparalleled celebration of military and cultural excellence. The 75th anniversary promises to be a landmark event, with performances that honor heroes from all walks of life and inspire future generations to uphold the values of courage, resilience, and service to others. The Tattoo is set to run throughout August, and it will undoubtedly be one of the most memorable events in the festival’s storied history.
